Over the years, your website has been an invaluable tool for your business. It has helped to attract new customers, provide information about your products and services, and establish your brand online. However, as technology and design trends have evolved, your website may have become outdated and stale. This can lead to a decrease in traffic, lower search engine rankings, and ultimately a decline in sales. But fear not, reviving your website can be a simple and cost-effective process.
In this post, I will share fresh ideas to help you combat a stale decade and bring new life to your website. From updating your website’s design and layout to optimising for mobile devices and improving your website’s speed, we’ve got you covered. Read on to learn how to give your website the boost it needs to thrive in today’s competitive online marketplace.
Assessing the Current State of your Website
Before embarking on a journey to revive your website, it’s crucial to assess its current state. Take a step back and analyse its design, functionality, and overall performance. Ask yourself some important questions: Does the design still resonate with your brand identity? Is the navigation intuitive and user-friendly? Are the loading times slow? Are there any broken links or outdated content?
Start by evaluating the visual appeal of your website. Does it look dated or modern? Consider current design trends and compare them to your website’s appearance. Take a look at competitor websites operating in the same field as you. Are they old and mouldy like yours, or looking fresh and modern? Make a note of what you like and don’t like about their website and note user interactive features they may have deployed. Look for elements that may be hindering the user experience, such as cluttered layouts, outdated or excessive use of graphics, or confusing colour schemes. A clean and visually pleasing design is essential for capturing and retaining visitors’ attention.
Next, examine the functionality and user experience of your website. Put yourself in the shoes of a visitor and go through the different sections and features. Is the navigation clear and intuitive, allowing users to easily find what they’re looking for? Are there any broken links or error messages that need to be addressed? Considering the increasing number of users accessing websites from their smartphones and tablets you should ask yourself: Is my website optimised for mobile devices?
Additionally, evaluate the performance of your website. Check its loading times and optimise them if necessary. Slow-loading pages can lead to high bounce rates and frustrated visitors. Ensure that the website is compatible with different browsers and devices, and that it adheres to web standards and accessibility guidelines.
Lastly, review the content on your website. Is it still relevant, accurate and up-to-date? Take the time to review each page and make necessary updates or revisions. Remove any outdated information, such as expired promotions or discontinued products or services, and replace them with fresh, compelling content that reflects your current offerings.
By thoroughly assessing the current state of your website, you will have a clear understanding of its strengths and weaknesses. This evaluation will serve as a foundation for implementing the necessary changes and breathing new life into your website.
After Thorough Evaluation
Even if all of your content is still relevant, a website re-design alone can be enough to breathe new life into its appearance, enhance the user experience and capture the attention of potential customers. Think about giving your website a new layout, new fonts for your content and a new colour scheme. Choose a colour scheme of only three or four colours at most.
Consider adding new sections or features to your website to provide additional value to keep visitors from hitting the back button as soon as they land on your page.
This could include a blog or news section where you can regularly share industry insights, updates, or helpful tips related to your products or services. If you’re a service company you may be providing only a phone number for potential clients to call to make appointments. Many won’t bother as today’s trend is to do everything online where-ever possible, so consider adding an online booking calendar. Your competitor has one on their site, right? If they don’t, consider it an opportunity for you to get ahead of the competition.
Don’t forget about the importance of mobile optimisation. With the majority of internet users accessing websites through their mobile devices, it’s crucial to ensure that your website is responsive and provides an optimal browsing experience across various screen sizes. Test your website’s responsiveness on different devices and make necessary adjustments to ensure seamless navigation and readability.
You want your visitors to stay on your website to find what they need so consider closing all the exit doors. By that I mean; get rid of any unnecessary advertising on your site. If you’re hosting ad’s for other peoples products and services, not only are those ad’s a potential distraction, especially those awful flashing type, but you’re also offering a fast-track exit door for your visitors to run through before making a purchase or finding what they need on your site.
Stay current, relevant, and visually appealing to combat the staleness that can come with a decade-old website and set yourself up for continued success in the digital landscape.
Thanks so much for reading this article. I hope it may have given you some inspiration or even the motivation to consider a website makeover.
